About This Blog

Where I'm from?
Well I was born in Austin, Tx. in 1974. I was raised by a father who was technical drafter and my mom did clerical work for the state of Texas, along with my one brother Robert.

When did I get exposed to art?
I've been exposed to art all of my life because even though my dad did drafting at his job, he kept a small area at home that he would bring home some projects to do. Later on my father quit his job and became a freelance artist full time, so that meant I got even more exposure to the art life. Art was basically in my blood since my dad was an artist and my mother was creative in more at organizing and desktop publishing. I was told that i first started budding as an artist when i was about three years old, which didn't mean i was any good at that age but i've never lost my interest like some kids do as they get older. My brother and i both grew up watching my dad drawing at his large wooden drafting table, but as i got older i started to ask him lots of questions and flipped through all the art books on his shelves to learn everything i can.

What made me want to be an artist?
Since as young as i can remember i've always wanted to be an artist when i grew up, i just didn't know what kind of artist.
The highlight of my artistic life was when my dad started to refer people to me to draw things because when i was little i thought my dad was a great artist and i never thought i would be as great as him, but i did want to follow in his large foot steps. So when he could call on me instead of doing the projects himself made me feel like he was passing his crown to me. Now that i feel that crown, i feel obligated to continue that artistic legacy by being the best i can be and keep getting better. I was so proud to see that my three children came out of me with different levels of creative traits, but i don't try to force them to be the same type of artist as me, it is up to them to make their own path.

How did I learn how to draw?
My training as an artist started from watching my dad and practicing what i saw and the tips he gave me along the way. I used to love art class up until my freshman year in high school, because by that time i started to notice that the art teachers didn't know how to how to motivate the creativity inside of me and i even started getting failing grades in class so i stopped taking it. My best friend in high school was also an artist named Johari Templin. He and i would hang out drawing together but he kept taking art classes till graduation. I would visit him in his classroom at lunch and i noticed how his teachers would counsel him about plans after graduation. Seeing that interaction almost convinced me to start back taking art classes but back then my focus was just getting out of school because i hated it so much. After graduation he and i still hung together drawing but our careers took two different directions. I went immediately to working regular job but Johari had quickly got a job working drawing at a video game company. Back then he tried to get me to go in with him telling me it was really easy to get hired in the video game industry, all you needed to know was how to draw and they would teach you the computer stuff but i didn't go for it. I continued working regular jobs while i kept developing my drawing skills and doing freelance work on the side. I sometimes wonder what kind of artist i would be if i would have followed my friend to design video games or went to learn art in college. But instead I remained independent, learning what I could on my own. I became pretty good drawing comics so I thought for sure I would be a comic artist but that started to change when I started to teach myself photoshop in 2001. It just came natural to me to adapt my artistic instincts in the digital environment to design print and web graphics.

What is my favorite artist?
I didn't have one favorite artist growing up because i loved absorbing all artist and styles. But in my teen years i got more into comics, then i fell in love with Jim Lee, John Romita Jr. and Todd McFarlane. I would copy and study their styles but even though i loved their art, what i loved even more is the fact that they didn't just sit on their skills and just be happy being good, they strived to be great. Seeing them make great art that is published for the whole world to see inspires me to want to the same in my own way.

What is your goal in life as an artist?
I don't wish to be rich and a famous artist, i just would love to be recognized as a true artist when somebody asks who is Karl Bailey Jr. When i'm gone I want to leave legacy of artwork that is pleasing to the eye and has multiple interpretation. But while i'm alive i want to continue to bring my clients mental visions to reality visually at the same time do it in a way that lets the world peek into my imagination.

...Be True to the Art.
